Cold calling. The words are enough to send chills down some people’s spines. The thought of doing it is abominable. It is understandably one of the most difficult things to do, whether you’re reaching out for help, trying to make connections in an industry or just need some information from someone.

For the sake of simplicity, we’ll cluster cold calling, cold emailing, sending those Linkedin messages to non-connections and any interaction between you and a complete stranger into the term cold calling. In this day and age, emails are usually your first point of contact. But since the term cold emailing has not been officiated yet, we’ll go with cold calling.

Without knowing that there was a term for it, I’ve been doing cold calling since my early childhood. I believe it is one of the single most important factor in getting me to where I am today. From where I began, it was highly unlikely to get to where I am now. My career journey is undoubtedly a six sigma event, for the better. And I would attribute a lot of that to just reaching out to people I had never met or had any sort of mutual connection with. So when I see people freak out over the prospects of reaching out to a complete stranger, it bothers me as to why is perceived as such an uncomfortable act.
